Another struggle for the Querandies

Punta Canal used to be a meeting point for the inhabitants of this area. A well-know spot for fishing with a quiet little shore, where the neighbors of «Ingeniero Maschwitz» gathered. Punta Querandi was that and it might continue like this if the Movimiento en Defensa de la Pacha (Movement in defense of the mother-earth), a collective of neighbors, environmentalists, indigenous activists that is struggling against EIDICO, a company that wants to develope a private neighborhood on this area, in order to maintain this river as a public space. This land has an additional value, ever since it was discovered an archaelogic ground from the inhabitants that pre-existed the foundation of Buenos Aires City: 1000 year-old remains helped to change the name of this shore, since «Querandi» was the name of this tribe. Also, this struggle has a very powerful symbolic and historic meaning, because the private companies developping private neighborhoods are linked to «Opus Dei», a catholic institution that reveals its influence if we take a look to the names of these housing projects: «Saint Catherine» and «Saint Benito», among many others. The «Whipala» Flag, a symbol of the indigenous tribes from South America, waving in front of small modern chapels and private security officers shows us that the land is earth, water and air, but also memory, culture and resistance.
